A few months ago I had the need to transfer a bunch of files from one laptop to another as a move to Utah necessitated the purchase of a new laptop. My business associate in South Dakota needed files from our current laptop, and didn’t know how to get them to his new computer.
Enter FTP Software!
Transferring files from one computer to another saved the day and some much needed work in installing programs and files to the new computer. Essentially, we learned how to do it online, so I’m sharing said information. The transfer has to be done while FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is running on the computer you are working on. The ‘other’ computer needs to have FTP available.
What you need:
- The machine you are working on needs to be running, attached to the Internet and have the FTP or sFTP software running.
- The ‘other’ computer or the one you are transferring files to needs to be running FTP or sFTP while being hooked up to the Internet.
- You must know the domain name of the remote or host machine, previously noted as ‘other’. Using the internet IP address of the ‘other’ computer will also work.
- You must have active accounts on both machines and know the passwords to both.
Without going into great detail, those are the items that you must know and must have to create a successful file transfer. The steps to do a file transfer are explained with just a bit of research on the Internet and are fairly simple to follow. Essentially, a gigantic problem was turned into a rather mundane issues where the problem was solved in a matter of hours. Far cry from the disaster that appeared to be waiting. If a couple of computer dummies can do it, anyone can.
