Designing web pages is a much different task today than it was even a few years ago. Web designers have become more skilled, and Internet users are much more savvy, so what may have been a good-looking page in 1999 would be considered amateurish and unprofessional in 2011. However, if web designers keep a few important tips in mind when they design their pages, they will be able to create professional and good-looking pages without too much additional effort.
One thing that should be considered when designing web pages is white space. Reading on the Web is different than reading in print. If a website owner wants to keep the attention of those who visit, they will format their text in short paragraphs with plenty of white space. This makes it easier for the reader to navigate through the page.
Navigation is a vital part of every web site. Setting up your links to be easy to access will make getting around easy on your visitors. Years ago, links were always set up in their own sections, and later buttons became the main way that links were shared. Currently, the preferred web designs have links integrated throughout to make them part of the normal content of the website.
One final tip to keep in mind when designing for the Internet is that CSS (cascading style sheet) is quickly becoming the preferred web design language. Pure CSS websites offer more accessibility for visitors, the code is more easily reused, and the file size of the pages is greatly reduced. Also, using CSS gives the web designer more control over the look of the pages they create. Many experts agree that the most important skill that can be learned today is designing pages using CSS instead of the traditional HTML (hypertext markup language).
